Namewee Faces Backlash For Derogatory Lyrics About BLACKPINK In Latest Music Video
It’s safe to say that Namewee has never been one to shy away from harsh criticism, and the release of his latest music video is just one in a string of controversies the Malaysian rapper and director has accumulated over his career.
Released last Friday, May 28, the 6-minute long video titled You Know Who Is My Father? written and composed by him in collaboration with an online casino sees Namewee, born Wee Meng Chee, playing a spoiled rich kid as he flaunts his father’s wealth surrounded by scandalously-clad women.
Accompanying the video is a description that reads: “The moral of the song – don’t play play with rich people, they can PIAK your face anytime they want, even in the steamboat restaurant.”
The issue didn’t lie in the character he played though, but in his rap, which has a mix of Mandarin, English and Malay, that contains the line, “Always look at Blackpink and masturbate.”
This left netizens and BLACKPINK fans enraged where they took to social media to express their thoughts, calling the line sexist and totally uncalled for. Topped with the hypersexualisation of women which left netizens thoroughly offended.
A fan on Instagram commented: “Respect Blackpink and it’s not hard to respect women. This is very disrespectful towards them so I really hope you can apologise for your actions.”
With another stating that he’s “messing with the wrong fandom.”
Just last December, the 38-year-old faced backlash around his award-winning film Babi, with police reports being filed against him claiming that certain parts of the movie aroused racial tension and hate speech, and that the movie poster contained several racial slurs thereby bringing a bad name to the nation’s image.
